Sustainability is one of the most used — and most misunderstood — words in packaging. Customers want eco-friendly options, but the terminology around them is genuinely confusing. Let's clear up a few myths.
Myth one: 'recyclable' and 'biodegradable' mean the same thing. They don't. Corrugated board is both recyclable and biodegradable, but plenty of materials are one without the other. Knowing the difference helps you make honest claims on your packaging.
Myth two: paper isn't renewable. In fact, responsibly sourced kraft paper comes from managed forests where trees are replanted. Combined with high recycled content, corrugated is one of the most circular materials in mainstream use today.
Myth three: sustainable packaging costs more. Often the opposite is true — right-sizing boxes, reducing ply where strength allows, and using recycled material can cut both material cost and shipping weight at the same time.
The honest position: corrugated packaging is already a strong sustainable choice, but the responsibility is in the details — sourcing, right-sizing, and clear, accurate labelling.
